Newlywed actress Mena Suvari reveals details of romantic Vatican wedding

They wanted to keep their big day private. But now Mena Suvari's wedding to her concert producer love Simone Sestito has taken place, the couple have shared details of the romantic nuptials with the world.

The ceremony, which took place at Santo Stefano degli Abissini, an 8th-century church in Vatican City, was "very traditional and romantic", say the newlyweds.

Mena walked down the aisle in an Alice + Olivia dress with Claudia Ciuti shoes and Nova Diamonds earrings to musical accompaniment from a string quartet, organist and soprano.

The white gold rings the couple exchanged were designed by the groom himself.

Following the ceremony guests headed to the 15th century Castello Odescalchi – the castle in nearby Bracciano where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes wed in 2006.

There they dined on risotto, raviolini and veal carré dishes before watching the newlyweds have their first dance, to the tune of an original dedication by Mario Reyes, the Gipsy Man, performing with members of the Gipsy Kings.

A fireworks display was another highlight of the evening.

Mena told US publication People the couple would be spending a few more days with family and friends in Rome before honeymooning around Italy.

Following that, they're looking forward to "a happy, fruitful life together".
