Kim is the pride of her Liverpool relatives as she's awarded honorary degree Sex and the City temptress Kim Cattrall shrugged off her sexy image to don an outfit that was a little more staid this week.

Not that the actress – who plays maneater Samantha Jones – would have minded since it was a magnificent royal blue cap and gown from Liverpool John Moores University, where she's been made an honorary fellow.

Accompanied by her proud mother Shane Cattrall at a ceremony in the city's cathedral, the 53-year-old told reporters the accolade was "a dream come true".

The Hollywood siren was born in the Mossley Hill area of Liverpool, moving to Canada with her family, aged three months.

Later Kim spoke to graduates from the lectern stressing the importance of family and education.

She said: "This is as much about family as it is about one individual. My family is here with me today. My mum, my aunties, my cousins, my friends.

"They have given me such confidence to make me believe that I could achieve anything I wanted to if I worked hard enough and I stayed true to myself."

In an emotional close that drew applause from her audience the actress said: "Whoever said "you can't go home again" didn't come from Liverpool. I feel very connected to this city.

"I am proud of my roots in Liverpool. I feel part of this city. Thank you for bringing me home."
