Britain's Olympic hope Jessica Ennis and construction site manager Andy Hill talk exclusively to HELLO! about their engagement
World Champion heptathlete Jessica Ennis has given her first exclusive interview since announcing her engagement – and has revealed that she won’t be wearing her sparkling diamond ring all the time. She will take it off when competing in events such as the long jump.
“I want to show it off, I don’t want to take it off,” she told HELLO!, adding that she has been wearing the ring during her hurdles and running practice. “But I don’t want to get any sand grains in it or lose it.”
Andy Hill, Jessica’s boyfriend of six-and-a-half years, proposed at their home in Sheffield on Christmas Eve. In his first ever interview, Andy revealed how Jessica can be a different woman on the track.
“You can definitely tell when Jess has gone into sportswoman mode,” he laughs. “You’ll be having a bit of banter and then all of a sudden she goes quiet, like she’s gone into the zone. At first I used to think, ‘What’s happening here?’”
The couple, who first met when they both attended King Ecbert School in Dore, Sheffield, can spend up to four weeks apart when Jessica goes off to compete in big competitions. Jessica reveals that she hardly speaks to Andy during an event. “I don’t want any distractions, so I’d be kicking myself If I’d been texting and talking to him all the way through, and then did rubbish.”
Jessica is even putting sporting ambitions before her wedding. She now plans to tie the knot in a Sheffield Church in 2013. “It’s such a big day and I want to give it my full attention,” she told HELLO!. “The Olympics is my priority for now – it’s scary, but very exciting.”
