The son shines: proud dad Kirk honours his favourite actor Michael

It was a proud moment to cap off a difficult year.

Michael Douglas, who has battled throat cancer and seen his own son imprisoned recently, looked delighted to be honoured with the Kirk Douglas Excellence in Film Award on Thursday.

That his father, 94-year-old movie legend Kirk, handed out the honour at a gala dinner in California, made it even more special.

“I am very happy to give this award to my favourite actor-producer who also happens to by my first-born son,” Kirk said.

“The first time I saw Michael act was in a play at UC Santa Barbara, so it is fitting that a career started here should be honoured here.”

Wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, who was dazzling in a glittery purple dress, watched proudly from the audience.

The award is named after movie icon Kirk, who won an honorary Academy Award for 50 years as a creative and moral force in the motion picture community in 1996.
