Demi Lovato reveals how rehab forced her to reconsider her friendships

Demi Lovato is riding high, with a brand new album and a starring role on the US X Factor judging panel. That hasn't always been the case for the pretty popstar, who spent time in rehab in 2010 — during which, she has revealed, she quickly found out who her real friends were. Demi, 20, has said she took a long, hard look at her social group after spending three months in the facility with her phone switched off."A couple of months before I went to rehab, I had a birthday party and there were a couple of hundred people there," she told Company magazine. "It was full of people who I considered my closest friends.

"When I turned my phone on after being in rehab for three months, I expected lots of text messages and phone calls. I had four texts. That was a wake-up call."That prompted the star to make some changes. "I don't have loads of friends. I used to, but then I realised, do any of them care?" she said. "Now I have people who, if I break my leg in the middle of the night, they'll come to the hospital with me. Or they'll answer the phone at 4am if I need them."Demi's fourth album is due to be released on 14 May, and she will soon be returning to the X Factor with Simon Cowell and two new judges. The new record marks a personal milestone for the star, who has successfully battled eating disorders, self-harm and alcohol abuse. She recently said during an interview on Live With Kelly and Michael that the songs reflected her life so far."With the album, I have a ton of upbeat songs, super catchy that get stuck in your head, which is a good thing," she said. "But I also have some pretty emotional dogs on there, opening up about things that I haven't ever really talked about. It's a big deal for me."
