Beyonce named one of the 20 most powerful women in the world

What do Beyonce, Queen Elizabeth, Angelina Jolie, Angela Merkel and Spanz founder Sara Blakely all have in common? They are among the world's most powerful women in 2013, according to a new list compiled by Forbes.

Entertainers, world leaders, philanthropists and entrepreneurs are all ranked in the annual snapshot of the 100 women with the most impact.


Number one is German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She has made the list eight times in the past ten years — seven times in the top spot. Other leading world figures include Hillary Clinton (no. 5), Michelle Obama (no. 4), the Queen (no. 40) and President of the Indian National Congree Sonia Gandhi (no. 9).

Celebrity role models who have been feted for their outside work — be it ambassadors for meaningful causes or as business owners — include Oprah Winfrey, founder of both Harpo Productions and The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. She was placed in 13th position.

Noted for their UN efforts are Angelina Jolie (no. 37), Shakira (no. 52) and Gisele Bundchen (no. 95). Founder of fashion line House of Deréon, Beyonce Knowles (no. 17), and Sophia Vergara (no. 38), co-owner of LatinWe, were also included.

Female entrepreneurs have certainly made their mark, many with companies synonymous with high fashion. Zara founder Rosalia Mera (no. 66), Miuccia Prada (No. 58) and Diane von Furstenberg (no. 74) all feature in the top 100.

Other notable entries include Sheryl Sandberg (no. 6), COO Facebook, Melinda Gates (no. 3), Lady Gaga (no. 45), Anna Wintour (no. 41), Spanx founder Sara Blakely (no. 90), Ellen DeGeneres (no. 51) and J.K. Rowling (93).
