Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes call time on their relationship

On-off couple Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have reportedly gone their separate ways.

The Hollywood stars, who have been dating since 2011 after meeting on the set of The Place Beyond The Pines, split over Christmas but details of their break-up are just emerging now.

"They decided to quietly call it off for good," an insider told InTouch. "There is no ill will. Neither is rushing out to date other people right now."

Ryan, 33, and Eva, 39, had gone through difficult patches since September. By Thanksgiving it was reported that the couple had decided to take a temporary break, as they felt they were rushing towards the next step – marriage – too fast.

"They knew it was time to take the next step and get married," said the insider. "But neither was sure they wanted that to happen."

Another issue the couple faced was attention from the media and conflicting lifestyles.

"Eva loves Hollywood, the parties, the glamour," another source said. "She loves going out." Ryan, meanwhile, preferred the quiet, "homebody" life.

The Canadian-born actor has reportedly gone back to his home country to take "time out of the limelight to refocus."

Ryan has been romantically linked to Rachel McAdams, Sandra Bullock and Blake Lively, while Eva was in a long-term relationship with musician George Gargurevich for almost a decade.
