Raised in a religiously devout family in Arkansas, Al was kicked out of his home as a teenager because he was caught listening to Jackie Wilson.

In high school, Al formed a vocal group with two friends and the group had moderate success but by 1969 Al had met famed Memphis record producer Willie Mitchell.

Willie signed Al to his record label and he soon began to mentor Al vocally, recommending he stop trying to sing like his idols.

By 1972 Al had released three albums and his third, Let's Stay Together, solidified Al's place in music history. The title track became his biggest hit.

By his fourth album Al had two albums certified gold, and Call Me, his fourth album, led to three top ten hits.

In the 1980s Al went back to his gospel roots and his first album, The Lord Will Make A Way, would lead to his first of eight Grammy awards.

Al was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and in 2002 he earned the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
