An actor, director, photographer, novelist, poet and teacher, James Franco's first role was in the short-lived television show Freaks and Geeks, but it was a critical success and in 2002 he joined Tobey Maguire in the original Spiderman trilogy which was his first big commercial success.
He joined forces with his Freaks and Geeks co-stars in the Judd Apatow comedy Knocked Up in 2007 before starring in Judd’s Pineapple Express with Seth Rogen.
In 2010 James was nominated for his first Academy Award, for his performance in Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours, the story of real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston who resorted to desperate measures when he became stuck while canyoneering alone in Utah.
The actor has also gone back to the small screen to star in hit US daytime soap General Hospital, and is a known performance artist.
He premiered his directorial debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, and in the same year starred as a gangster called Alien in the cult social commentary Spring Breakers.
In 2014 he made his Broadway debut in a revival of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.
