Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1969, Cate grew up fiercely independent after her father passed away when she was just 10 years old.
The stunning actress eventually enrolled at Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Arts, and after a few theatre performances, she won Sydney's Theatre Critics Circle's Best Newcomer of the Year award. Her first high-profile international role came when she played Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 film Elizabeth, for which she gained an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Cate has since gone on to receive many accolades throughout her career, including three Golden Globe Awards and three BAFTA Awards. In 2004 she received the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in The Aviator, and in 2014 she won her second Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Blue Jasmine.
The critically-acclaimed actress is married to screenwriter Andrew Upton, who she met on the set of a TV show. The couple have three sons: Dashiell, Roman and Ignatius.
