There were whoops, cheers and plenty of peace signs as Sir Paul McCartney became the last Beatle to be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Flanked by his wife of six months Nancy Shevell, his son James and fellow legend Neil Young, the star was positively buzzing with excitement.

His star will be in good company, having been placed next to those of his musical brothers John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr outside the Capitol Building. Paying tribute to them, the 69-year-old said: "I couldn't have done it without a certain three boys, so I want to say thanks to those guys, John, George and Ringo."

"In Liverpool, when we were kids and listening to Buddy Holly and all the other rock and roll greats, I would have never thought the day would come when I'd be getting a star on the Walk of Fame. "I thought it was an impossible thing to happen. But here we are today."

In a cheeky reference to his new album title, the 69-year-old legend also thanked fans around the world and sent them "hugs and kisses on the bottom". The Beatles were given a star as a group in 1998, more than 25 years after they split up. Postumous stars were also awarded to John and George after their deaths.Ringo, who got his in 2010, wasn't able to be at Thursday's ceremony because of ill health. But he would have agreed with Neil's praise for his bandmate. The Harvest Moon singer said Macca was "at the top of his game, adding: "Like Charlie Chaplin was a great actor, that's how I look at Paul. "Yet even with all of that craft that he has and his ability to put melodies and chords and feelings together, it's the soul that comes out of his music that makes me feel so good and so happy to be here with him today," he said.
