Michelle Williams is set to make her Broadway debut in 2014 when she takes on the role of Sally Bowles in Cabaret, the character who Liza Minelli famously played. New York's Roundabout Theatre Company confirmed that My Week With Marilyn actress Michelle would be joining Alan Cumming in the musical after Emma Stone pulled out of the project due to scheduling issues.

The show, which is due to preview on 21 March and open on 24 April, will take place at the Roundabout's Studio 54 theatre, where Cabaret last ran on Broadway between 1998 and 2004.

Oscar-nominated Michelle, who rose to fame in Dawson's Creek and also starred in Brokeback Mountain alongside her late partner Heath Ledger, will be in safe hands with her colleagues as many of them have been involved with the production before. Alan Cumming will be reprising the role of The Emcee, which he played in London in 1998 when the musical won the Tony Award for best musical revival. Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall are also reprising their roles as the show's directors and Rob will also be responsible for the choreography.

Cabaret is set in Berlin in 1931 and takes place in the Kit Kat Club whose world of luxury and indulgences becomes more precarious in the face of the looming Second World War. As well Liza Minelli's mother-of-one Michelle, 32, will join the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Natasha Richardson and Jill Haworth who have all played fishnet-and-bowler hat-wearing Sally.
