He then went on to continue his Disney career as teenage sweetheart Troy Bolton in the High School Musical franchise, with the first in the trilogy becoming the most watched Disney programme in history.
The Rolling Stone cover star continued showing-off his singing talents in a film adaption of the Broadway musical Hairspray in 2007. Playing golden boy Link Larken, Zac joined a star-studded cast including John Travolta, Christopher Walken and Queen Latifah and went on to win an MTV Award for Best Male Breakthrough Performance in the role.
In order to avoid type-casting, in 2009 Zac began branching out from musicals. He starred alongside Matthew Perry in coming-of-age film 17 again and in 2012 he played the role of an ex- marine in The Lucky One, a film based on Nicholas Spark's best-selling novel.

The year 2014 saw the star taking the lead in comedy films That Awkward Moment and Bad Neighbours.
Hailed as 'The American Heart-Throb', Zac dated HSM co-star Vanessa Hudgens for five years until the relationship broke down in 2010. Following from his amicable split with the Beastly actress, Zac briefly dated Australian beauty Teresa Palmer in 2011 and Avatar star Michelle Rodriguez in 2014.
The 27-year-old is reportedly now dating model Sami Miró.
