Amal Clooney stepped out for her debut at the Golden Globes on Sunday evening, and took the opportunity to show her solidarity with the victims of a series of terrorist attacks that took place in Paris last week. The barrister, who was stunning in a black gown by Dior and white gloves, carried a white clutch bag, also by Dior, with a "Je suis Charlie" badge pinned onto it. The British human rights lawyer told Elle magazine that her Dior outfit was "customised in solidarity with the French people who've gone through a terrible week",

She was joined by her handsome husband in making the statement – George Clooney was handsome in a tuxedo which bore the same accessory, which reads "I am Charlie" in French. The slogan honours the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, where eight journalists – along with two policemen and two bystanders – lost their lives to armed gunmen last week. It fast became one of the most widely-used hashtags on Twitter.

Dame Helen Mirren, Diane Kruger and Kathy Bates also voiced their support from the red carpet at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards held in Beverly Hills. Helen, 69, dazzled in a floor-length red gown as she posed for the cameras, holding a "Je suis Charlie" sign in her hands. The actress, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture award in the comedy or musical category, also had a pen pinned to her stunning dress, to symbolise freedom of the press and freedom of expression.

The stars' statement came as crowds reaching an estimated four million took to the streets of the French capital and across the country to march united against last week's atrocities, which saw 17 people die in a series of shocking attacks.

More than 40 world leaders joined the start of the march in Paris, including French leader François Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who linked arms in an act of solidarity.

Several celebrities have expressed their sorrow over the tragedy, including One Direction heart-throb Harry Styles, model Cara Delevingne and David Walliams, who tweeted a picture of Salman Rushdie and an excerpt from the author's speech in defence of Charlie Hebdo. Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, JK Rowling and Elijah Wood also added their voices to the chorus of support for the victims.
