Cristiano Ronaldo donates millions to help Nepal earthquake relief

Cristiano Ronaldo isn't only one of the most talented footballers in the world, he's also one of the most generous. It has been revealed that the 30-year-old recently donated £5million to help the global charity Save The Children carry out its earthquake relief efforts in Nepal.According to the French magazine So Foot, Cristiano gave away €7million (or $7.8million) because he wears the number seven shirt for his club Real Madrid and for his country Portugal. He also urged his 100 million Facebook followers to support the children's charity.

The dad-of-one is no stranger to such acts of generosity. Last year, he was asked to donate some items to help raise €60,000 to pay for an operation for a ten-month-old baby boy suffering with cortical dysplasia. He donated his shirt and boots, and paid for the operation on top of it.Cristiano works closely with Unicef and World Vision, and has donated millions to help children in Gaza. In 2004, he flew to Indonesia to help in the aftermath of the tsunami having seen a survivor there wearing a shirt with his name on the back.Nepal was devastated when an earthquake registering 7.8 on the Richter Scale hit on 25 April, claiming the lives of 8,000 people. A second earthquake struck on 12 May, registering 7.3 with tremors felt as far away as Delhi, 690km away. It is estimated to have killed 16 people and injured 846.

Cristiano is thought to be the world's second-highest paid athlete, with Forbes estimating he makes £17million ($28million) in endorsements and £33million ($52million) in salary and winnings. To his credit, he chooses to keep his acts of generosity to himself, and his Facebook page makes no reference to his huge contribution towards the relief efforts in Nepal.
