Julia Roberts said her final goodbye to her late mother Betty Lou Motes in a private memorial service over the weekend. The actress' mum passed away on 19 February at the age of 80 after losing a battle with lung cancer.

Keen to keep the ceremony as private as possible, Julia only invited Betty's nearest and dearest to the memorial.

It was held in the family's local cemetery in Smyrna, Georgia – the city where the Hollywood star was born after her parents Betty and Walter Roberts moved there, five years into their marriage.

Julia was reportedly accompanied by her ten-year-old twins Hazel and Finn, while her husband Daniel Moder and the couple's younger son Henry, seven, were not seen in attendance.

The Pretty Woman star had hired about ten security guards to keep members of the public out of the cemetery while they conducted the memorial at the Motes family plot, where Julia's younger half-sister Nancy Motes is also buried. To ensure the utmost privacy, two small blue tents were also erected around the plot.

A massive bouquet of daisies was pictured arriving for the ceremony, while a bright purple decorative piece that spelt out "Nancy" was laid down beside the late production assistant's headstone.

Nancy, who was 37 at the time of her death, was Betty's daughter and only child from her second marriage to Michael Motes. She had been battling an addiction to prescription drugs and was found dead inside her Los Angeles apartment of an apparent drug overdose.

Julia and Nancy were close growing up, but in their later years Nancy is said to have struggled with the actress' fame, and was upset by her departure from the family home for Hollywood when Nancy was just nine.

After she passed away, the siblings' mum Betty moved in with Julia and she was treated at the nearby Saint John's Health Centre in Santa Monica for cancer. Betty herself died ten days after Nancy's first death anniversary in February 2015.
