Joni Mitchell's rep confirms star had aneurysm but denies reports that she is unable to speak

After suffering a brain aneurysm in March, Joni Mitchell is "getting better each day", her representative says. Leslie Morris, the singer's spokesperson and conservator posted an update on the singer's website after reports circulated that Joni was unable to speak.

Leslie confirmed the aneurism, but said other other details of her conditione were "mostly speculative". "The truth is that Joni is speaking, and she's speaking well," she wrote. "She is not walking yet, but she will be in the near future as she is undergoing daily therapies. She is resting comfortably in her own home and she's getting better each day. A full recovery is expected."

Joni's former boyfriend and fellow musician David Crosby had originally told the Huffington Post: "To my knowledge, she is not speaking yet. She is home, she is in care, she is in recovery. How that's going to go, we don't know yet."

The Both Sides, Now singer was found unconscious in her Los Angeles home three months ago and on the way to hospital she regained consciousness in the ambulance.

David, however, added that "nobody found her for a while".

"She took a terrible hit," said the 73-year-old. "She had an aneurysm and she's going to have to struggle back from it the way you struggle back from a traumatic brain injury."

The pair, who dated in 1967, have remained close friends for life and praising his ex-girlfriend, David said: "She's a tough girl and very smart. I love her. She's probably the best of us – probably the greatest living singer-songwriter."

"[But] I think we're all holding our breath and thinking of goodbye, you know? And hoping it's gonna turn out okay," he added.

A statement released on Joni's official website one month after the incident claimed that the singer was "alert" and expected to make a full recovery. The message also reassured fans that she was not in a coma and was being cared for by her longtime friend Leslie.

"As we all know, Joni is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight. Please continue to keep Joni in your thoughts," the statement ended.

Joni, 71, has received eight Grammy Awards during her career, which kicked off in the sixties. With popular hits like Big Yellow Taxi and Woodstock, Joni is largely regarded as a singer-songwriter who helped define a musical era.

When she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, Joni was cited as "one of the most important female recording artists of the rock era" and "a powerful influence on all artists who embrace diversity, imagination and integrity".
