Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter looked closer than ever on Thursday evening as they made their first public appearance since becoming parents. The couple, who announced the birth of their son on 13 June, attended the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party in Kensington Gardens.

The Imitation Game actor could not keep his eyes off his wife, who was showing no sign of sleepless nights. Sophie looked as stylish as ever in a full-skirted navy midi dress which she teamed with black heels and a clutch bag.

Meanwhile Benedict co-ordinated with his wife wearing a smart dark blue suit and white shirt. He couldn't keep the smile from his face as he posed alongside Sophie for photos at the annual summer party, which was also attended by the likes of Kate Hudson, Suki Waterhouse and mum-to-be Fearne Cotton.

Benedict and Sophie welcomed their first child together in June, just days after the actor was named a CBE in the Queen's birthday honours list. Representatives for Benedict released a statement confirming the happy news on Saturday 13 June.

"Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are delighted to announce the arrival of their beautiful son," read a statement from the couple.

Suki Waterhouse was among the famous guests at the party

The couple have had a whirlwind year which has seen them get married in a romantic Valentine's Day ceremony and welcome their first child as Benedict's Hollywood career has skyrocketed. The thespian, who spent months playing Richard III for BBC, revealed earlier in the year that he was more than ready to take a break and prepare for his new role as a father.

"I've been on muddy fields and on horseback playing Richard III for the BBC and I've been on more flights to Los Angeles and back than I can count," the star told the Daily Mail in February. "All of that has been special, but I'm ready to have a couple of months to ourselves to prepare for the baby and do some nesting. It's a real-life role, not a part."
