Johnny Depp delighted a group of sick children by surprising them in hospital in Australia. The Hollywood actor was in Brisbane, Queensland filming the latest instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean, when he took time out to visit the youngsters.

Dressed in full pirate regalia and keeping in character, Johnny entertained the kids as the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow.

The 52-year-old, who arrived at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital by helicopter, went from ward to ward surprising the children and handing out gold.

Images and videos posted on social media showed the actor proving a hit with the kids. One of the delighted children he met was seven-year-old Max Bennett, who suffers from a rare neurological disorder and has been in hospital for over a month.

"He was going from room to room seeing all the kids who couldn't get out of bed," Max's mum Rachel told ABC Australia of the star's visit. "We waited out of the front of one of the rooms, and he came up to us and had a really good chat to Max."

Johnny entertained Max by cracking jokes, trying and failing to spell the little boy's name, and by presenting him with gold pirate coins.

"[His costume] was pretty cool," said Max, who is a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. "He was funny. He tied a knot in his hair to make a beard. That was my favourite part."

Max's mum added: "He was taking his time to make sure he spoke to each and every one of them. It was really beautiful."

Johnny met one particularly excited girl, who leapt onto him and gave him a big embrace after the actor asked, "Can I have a hug?"

The Kentucky-born talent also posed for a photograph with her, joking, "Now if there's other people in it, why do you call it a selfie?"

Johnny has been in Australia for the past few months filming Dead Men Tell No Tales. He was joined by his new wife Amber Heard for part of the trip. Their initial arrival Down Under was slightly tainted when Johnny was forced to fly his two pet dogs out of the country and back to his native US, after they failed to comply with quarantine laws.
