Michael Winner's widow attacked during raid on her home

Michael Winner's widow, Geraldine Winner, is recovering after being attacked in her home by two intruders. A man and a women broke into the pensioner's house in Knightsbridge, central London, at around 10pm on Friday evening. During the three hour raid, they beat 77-year-old Geraldine with an iron bar and stole a number of items, according to police.Geraldine is now in a stable condition, and was seen returning home on Sunday after an overnight stay in hospital.

Without naming Mrs Winner, a police spokesman confirmed that officers had been called at around 2am on Saturday following a report of aggravated burglary. "Two suspects – a male and a female – forced their way into the home of a woman in her 70s and assaulted her with an iron bar before stealing a number of items at approximately 10pm on Friday," he said. "It is believed the suspects left between 1am and 2am on October 10. The woman was taken to a west London hospital by ambulance and is in a stable condition. Inquiries continue. There have been no arrests."

Michael Winner made more than 30 films in his lifetime, including the blockbuster Death Wish series. He later reinvented himself as a restaurant critic, writing a column for the Sunday Times titled Winner's Dinners.He and Geraldine first met in the late 1950s, but weren't married until 2011. She nursed him through a long battle with liver disease until his death, aged 77, in January 2013.Paying tribute to her husband at the time, Geraldine said: "Michael was a wonderful man, brilliant, funny and generous. A light has gone out in my life."
