Katy Perry has been named the Queen of Twitter after becoming the first person ever to reach 80 million followers on the social networking site. The Firework singer, who has been active on Twitter since 2009, now has over seven million more followers than her closest rival Justin Bieber.

Following behind in third place is Taylor Swift, who has a similarly impressive 69 million followers.

Katy has previously suggested that her popularity on the site may be due to the fact that her tweets are not premeditated, explaining: "I would say 90 per cent of my Tweets, I've just made them up and you can tell because many of them are misspelled and full of typos.

"But the other five per cent is work related or it's just to keep people in the know about where I'm playing or if I'm doing a show and I always get really confused."

The 31-year-old has also admitted that while she has 80 million followers hanging on her every word, she sometimes likes to take a break from social media to enjoy her downtime.

"Right now I'm in a relaxed, chilled vacationing zone, I've got my Spanx on and I'm just taking a little break," she told Mashable. "I think I have to find that balance between Tweeting too much and plus I have so many followers that nobody really wants me to fill up their timeline."

Twitter is not the only area where Katy reigns supreme; in June the popular singer was named the highest-paid female celebrity of the year by Forbes magazine after earning $135million in the previous year.

Speaking to the magazine after the announcement, Katy said she was proud of her success and hoped she could inspire others.

"I am proud of my position as a boss, as a person that runs my own company," Katy explained, adding: "I'm not here to brag, I'm here to inspire other females."
