The first anyone knew of Gary Lineker and Danielle Lineker's split was when the news broke just a few hours before a judge issued a decree nisi officially ending their six-year marriage. Despite much speculation about the reasons for their break-up, the couple are remaining tight-lipped, and have both since taken to Twitter to reiterate their friendship and affection for one another. One thing that has emerged about the shock split, however, is the fact that it was Danielle who began the proceedings to end the couple's union – citing Gary's "unreasonable behaviour". But that decision, it seems, was through necessity, as a spokesperson for Danielle explained.

Danielle Lineker cited 'unreasonable behaviour' in her divorce papers

"According to UK law, only one party can actually file, regardless of whether it is a mutual decision," the spokesperson told the Mail. "The law also states that you have to choose one of two reasons for parting; either adultery or unreasonable behaviour. "Therefore a decision was made for Danielle to file and (it) wasn't adultery. "Certainly the couple seemed to have parted on very good terms. Just ten days ago, they were spotted out together at a theatre in London, and while Danielle wasn't wearing her wedding ring, they seemed happy and relaxed in each other's company.Taking to Twitter after the news broke, Gary wrote: "Thank you all for your kind words. @DanielleBux and I had many wonderful years together. We remain very close and the greatest of friends."Danielle added: "We have shared the most incredible 8 years that I will always cherish. We will remain the best of friends."

Gary Lineker and wife Danielle surprised fans with the news of their split

The couple also chose to divorce using a government website that costs around £400, rather than spend a lot of money on high legal fees.A source close to the couple told the Sun: "Usually these things are very sad and acrimonious but with Gary and Danielle it is very much friendly with no legal battle that can cost a lot of money. "They didn’t use solicitors and filed for divorce together using a government website where they filled out the forms together. It cost about £400, rather than tens of thousands in legal bills. "They made a great couple but their different views on having children is what made them realise they had to split. They both know it is the right thing to do and are looking forward to the future. They are convinced they will stay friends. "Gary has four grown-up sons – George, Tobias, Harry and Angus - from his first marriage to Michelle Cockayne and was thought to be against starting a young family. Danielle, meanwhile, has a 13-yar-old daughter from a previous relationship.
