Cameron Diaz has said she is "grateful" to her husband Benji Madden for helping her to learn so much about herself. The Annie actress said it has been both one of her best and worst experiences of married life in a revealing interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

"Someone asked me, what's your favourite thing about being married? And I was like, 'Well I just learned so much about myself.' I didn't know these things and I was like I would never have known them if I didn't meet my husband who helped me," Cameron explained.

Cameron has opened up about married life

However the actress admits that it is sometimes a "double-edged sword".

"And they're like what's the worst thing about being married?" she continued. "Well, I learned all these things about myself that I wish I never learned about myself and I wouldn't have known them if I didn't get married. You know so it's like this double-edged sword.

"But I'm just so grateful for it because I couldn't do it without my husband and I couldn't do it with anybody else except for him."

The couple tied the knot after seven months

Cameron has been increasingly more open about her marriage in recent weeks and revealed that she "just knew" that he would be her husband as soon as they met. Speaking to radio host Andy Cohen, the 43-year-old explained: "It was one of those things where everyone tells you, 'You just know when you know.' I was like, 'What does that mean?' Oh, I get it. You just know when you know. Like you're my husband.

"The first thing I said when I met my husband was, 'He's hot.' How come I didn't know this before? We had never been in the same circle… You know, nothing matters now that I have my husband. Like, I don't even remember any of that."

She continued: "All of that is like, that's the thing, that's how I know he's my husband… No one compares. Everything else is just like washes and slips away. You realise like, 'Oh this is like the real thing is. This is what real love is. This is what real commitment and devotion is. This is the person you build your life with."
