Liam Hemsworth has opened up about the real reason he and Miley Cyrus called off their engagement in 2013, saying he believes it was a "good decision". The Independence Day: Resurgence star rekindled his relationship with Miley over the New Year, and it appears the two years they spent apart have made them stronger.

Speaking to GQ Australia about the original break-up, Liam said: "Of course it was hard, man. But at the time we were going in different directions and it's just what needed to happen.

"We were both super young and it was a good decision at the time – we both needed that."

Liam said his split from Miley Cyrus was a "good decision"

The couple reunited six months ago, and are already rumoured to be engaged after Miley started wearing the Neil Lane 3.5 carat diamond ring Liam presented her with in May 2012.

Addressing their on-off relationship, Liam said: "I guess when I feel something, then I just feel it and I go for it.

"I make my decisions about what's going to make me happy, what I think is right and what I want to do – and I don't worry too much outside of that."

However the 26-year-old wouldn't go into too much detail about their romance.

The couple got back together over the New Year

"People will figure it out, they already have," Liam said. "They're not dumb."

While Miley and Liam are keeping relatively quiet about their relationship, the Wrecking Ball singer's father Billy Ray Cyrus recently said the couple are "really happy together right now" during an appearance on the TODAY show.

The couple also have the seal of approval from Miley's godmother Dolly Parton, who said she was "really happy to hear that they had gotten back together," during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in March.

Miley and Liam started dating in 2009 when they met on the set of The Last Song, and they were together on-and-off for three years before announcing their engagement in June 2012. The couple decided to split in September 2013 but reunited at the end of 2015.
