Amber Heard donates her £5million Johnny Depp divorce settlement to charity

Amber Heard is donating the £5million she secured in her divorce settlement to two charities. Half will go to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and the other half to the American Civil Liberties Union, which works to prevent violence against women.

The actress reached an agreement with her ex-husband Johnny Depp on Tuesday, putting an end to one of the most acrimonious splits in Hollywood.

In a statement Amber, who has accused Johnny of domestic abuse, said she hoped to "help those less able to defend themselves".

Addressing her divorce settlement, Amber, 30, wrote: "Money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.

"As reported in the media, the amount received in the divorce was $7m and $7m is being donated. This is over and above any funds that I have given away in the past and will continue to give away in the future."

She added that the money donated to the ACLU would have a "particular focus to stop violence against women".

"I know these organisations will put the funds to good use and look forward to continuing to support them in the future," she wrote. "Hopefully, this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most."

The couple reached a divorce agreement on Tuesday

Amber and Johnny's divorce settlement was agreed on Tuesday, one day before a court hearing into Johnny's restraining order was due to take place. Amber had previously requested a domestic violence restraining order against her ex, after she accused him of hitting her and throwing a mobile phone during a fight.

The request for a temporary restraining order was withdrawn and both parties also released a joint statement announcing the end of their divorce battle.

They wrote: "Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains."

It concluded by saying that "Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future", adding that she would be "donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity".

The couple married in February 2015 after meeting on the set of The Rum Diary, when Johnny, 53, was still involved with his long-term girlfriend Vanessa Paradis.
