Celebrities took to Twitter in their droves to poke fun at Donald Trump during the final presidential debate between him and Hillary Clinton on Wednesday night. But it was JK Rowling who really got social media in a spin when she labelled Donald a "giant orange Twitter egg".

The third round of the brutal US presidential TV debate saw the Harry Potter author - who has made no secret of her dislike of the Republican nominee - share her thoughts with her followers throughout the heated exchange.

"Well, there you have it. A highly intelligent, experienced woman just debated a giant orange Twitter egg. Your move, America. #debate," she tweeted. A "Twitter egg" is a phrase used to mean a Twitter troll, and describes people who don't upload a profile picture on the network.

Making their views really clear, many celebrities voiced their support to Hillary on their social media accounts.

"Not only has #HillaryClinton brought receipts, she's highlighted them for Trump's instant perusal. Debate101 #Winning," wrote Hollywood star Octavia Spencer.

"'Such a nasty woman' he's not even hiding his sexism," tweeted actress Chloe Grace Moretz, while singer John Legend posted: "With that 'lots of luck' comment, I think Trump just admitted that he knows Hillary will be the next President."

Also showing her backing, Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain said: "Where's my Nasty Woman t-shirt?! 'No my firt name ain't baby, its Hillary, Madame President if youre nasty.' #imwither @HillaryClinton"

"Someone count how many times he is clenching his jaw as she speaks. Crazy. #debates," tweeted pop star Katy Perry.

Before the televised debate, Eva Longoria shared a photo of herself looking nervous as she held a glass of wine and a bottle. She teased: "Ready for the debate tonight!! The big decision tonight… glass or bottle? #ImWithHer".

Ellen DeGeneres also joked: "Since The Real Housewives isn't on tonight, I guess I'll have to see a catfight the old-fashioned way… by watching the #debate."

Meanwhile, Trump's "bad hombres" was perhaps one of the biggest highlights from the night.

"Bad Hombres is a good band name," Zach Braff joked, while Whoopi Goldberg noted: "Bad hombres?"
