Not for the first time, Donald Trump caused controversy on Twitter this week when he hit back at Meryl Streep over her scathing Golden Globes speech. The President-elect decided to take Meryl to task after she publicly criticised him at the awards ceremony, telling his 19.2million followers: "Meryl Streep, one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes." He added: "She's a Hillary flunky who lost big."

But Donald's opinion of Meryl hasn’t always been so cutting. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in August 2015, the 70-year-old was asked to name his favourite actresses, and Meryl was up there at the top of his list.

"Julia Roberts is terrific, and many others. Meryl Streep is excellent; she's a fine person, too," he replied. "The problem is I'll name three or four or five and then the hundred that I know will be insulted, and I don't mean to insult them."

Donald – who will become America's 45th president in nine days – has come under fire following his comments on social media. George Clooney is among those who have publicly criticised the politician, and given their backing to Meryl following her fiery attack.

"Aren't you supposed to be running the country," George said in response, while attending a reception for Netflix documentary The White Helmets. "I didn't vote for him, I don't support him, I don't think he is the right choice.

"At this moment in our lives, we have to hope that he doesn't destroy everything. The reality is you have to hope he will do a decent job because if the United States fails, really terrible things can happen, so you have to hope that he can." But, he added, "I don't see any signs of that."
