Justin Trudeau presents Malala Yousafzai with honorary Canadian citizenship

History was made on Parliament Hill on Wednesday 12 April when Malala Yousafzai became the youngest person to receive an honorary Canadian citizenship. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau presented the honour during an inspiring ceremony in the House of Commons.

Justin described the Nobel Peace Prize winner as a “trailblazer,” a “model of kindness” and someone who is “impossibly humble.” The political figure’s wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau also praised the young activist, calling her "courage, grace and strength" contagious. Malala was equally complimentary to Canada's head of government. During her moving speech, she called Justin “an amazing person and inspiration,” adding that his leadership is “a true example to the world.”

Earlier this month, the Prime Minister's office announced that Malala would visit the nation's capital to accept an honorary citizenship that was bestowed on her in 2014. At age 15, Malala was critically injured by the Taliban on her way to school in Pakistan. Following her miraculous recovery, the fiercely strong-willed teenager has been an outspoken advocate for girls' education and women's rights.

Malala's work has inspired millions around the world, and has touched some of Hollywood's biggest stars who have applauded her for her unyielding dedication to changing the world. Beyoncé has thanked Malala for her "bravery and perseverance" that "has touched the world" and fellow celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon, Justin Bieber, Hannah Simone, Selena Gomez have all praised her for her sheer determination to help ensure every girl has the chance to go to school.
