Miley Cyrus is letting her new music tell the story of her on/off relationship with Liam Hemsworth. "They're going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam," she told Billboard Magazine about her upcoming single Malibu, dedicated to the Independence Day star. "So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, 'This is how I feel?'" The 'sentimental' track was written on her way to work on NBC's The Voice and came as a surprise to the pop star.

"I never would've believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song," she said.  The We Can't Stop singer and Liam, 27, ended their relationship in 2013 after deciding it was time to grow. "I needed to change so much," she said. "And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard." She continued: "Suddenly you're like, 'I don't recognize you anymore.' We had to re-fall for each other." And that they did when the couple, who share a house and seven dogs, rekindled their romance in 2016.

In 2016, Liam opened up about the pair's tough split telling GQ Australia, "Of course it was hard," he said. "But at the time we were going in different directions and it's just what needed to happen. We were both super young and it was a good decision at the time – we both needed that." Since reuniting, Miley has traveled with Liam to Australia for some family bonding with his brothers Luke and Chris as well as Elsa Pataky. Though plans for their wedding have not been shared, fans speculated in March that the pair, who met on set of The Last Song in 2009, already tied the knot when Miley's father Billy Ray posted a photo of his daughter in a white dress on his Instagram.
