STORY: Nadia Sawalha's husband opens up about alcohol addiction in personal home video

She explained: "It took me a couple of years to realise that Mark wasn't just a party guy or a heavy drinker, he was just an alcoholic. There is a real difference between somebody who drinks and somebody who is an alcoholic. I had to be able to say to him, 'No more'." The presenter added: "It's such a hard thing to be honest and say that we've got a major problem here. I was enabling him. I was helping him be an alcoholic by covering for him because nobody knew he was an alcoholic except me. I said, 'You won't spend one more night in this house if you don't get help for alcoholism'." She went on: "I also knew that I wasn't going to live with him if he carried on. He might not have survived."

Nadia Sawalha recently spoke about her husband's past battle with alcohol

Last year, the couple gave a candid insight into his battle with alcoholism, describing every day as a "struggle". In a searingly honest home video, they shared their thoughts on the addiction which occurred in the early stages of their marriage. In a Youtube video, shared on Nadia and Kaye Adams' channel, Mark explained: "Every day is a struggle. Every day is a huge effort, to not get up literally, but a huge effort to tackle the day. The whole day is to be attacked, to be grappled with, it's to be fought. It is exhausting. I always say to Nadia and the girls, 'Look you're all finding me irritating now, you can all walk through that door and leave me, I can't, I have to stay in the same room as me.'"

EXCLUSIVE: Nadia reveals why her daughters are being home-schooled

The couple, who married in 2002 and have two daughters together, discussed how the period over Christmas is perhaps the hardest when trying to resist the temptation. Nadia said: "Sometimes it's a real struggle, but it is a struggle for the person living with the person as well, because I wake up and I'm naturally really happy but if someone has got depression and they're not happy, you almost feel guilty that you wake up jolly.
