Aga Khan and Sally Croker-Poole
Estimated settlement: $80 million
The former Sally Croker-Poole, a British-born debutante, took the name Begum Salima Aga Khan when she wed the billionaire spiritual leader of millions of Ismaili Muslims. And when she divorced the Aga Khan in 1995 after 25 years of marriage, she left with $32 million in cash and $48 million in jewellery, at the time one of the biggest settlements in Europe.
Within months, however, a selection of the jewellery collection was on the auction block. Prices for the gems, including the "Begum Blue", a 13.78 carat deep-blue diamond necklace, reached up to eight times their estimate, bringing in a total of $27 million – about $12 million more than expected.
