Everyone loves a romantic hero. Colin Firth won legions of fans as the definitive Mr Darcy, Toby Stephens brooded his way through Jane Eyre as the tormented Edward Rochester, and now it is the turn of Spooks star Rupert Penry-Jones. The 36-year-old actor is set to make a whole new fan-base in 2007 in the ITV adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion.

He plays the lovelorn Captain Wentworth opposite Sally Hawkins in the drama which was filmed in picturesque Bath and the Lake District. The photogenic Welshman, best known as super-spy Adam Carter, will make his exit from the MI5 drama to focus on other projects such as the Stephen Poliakoff drama he's currently working on alongside Michael Gambon and Kelly Reilly.
