The shy girl with the standout voice, X-Factor's Leona Lewis is set to be the music industry's brightest new star after she became the first girl to win the hit talent show. A former receptionist from Stoke Newington, the 21-year-old is being hailed Britain's answer to Mariah Carey, looking set to crack America and top the charts in 2007.

"Leona has an opportunity to become a major, major worldwide star," says music mogul Simon Cowell - whose has signed her up in a 1 million record deal. "It's obviously in Leona's interests to make an album she's comfortable with, and try and make everyone who voted for her proud that we've found a British girl who's up there with the Mariahs and Whitneys," says Simon. The famously critical judge, who was also Leona's mentor during the talent series, hailed her as the "best act ever" in the show's three-year history. And after her stunning win, Simon was understandably chuffed. "I'm the proudest person in the world right now. She's going to be an international star."
