Just five years ago Belgrade-born Ana Ivanovic, 19, was practicing tennis in a disused Olympic-size swimming pool, turned into a tennis court with the help of two nets and carpet on the floor. "It was impossible to play," she recalls. "But that's where I grew up practising and it's where people still practise."

The strikingly pretty Serbian star and world number six, who's now based in Switzerland, was inspired to take up the game at the age of five after watching her heroine Monica Seles play on TV. Her achievements are all the more startling considering her upbringing in a war-town country with little facilities. "I've worked hard for it and now I'm happy to see the results," she says.
