Culinary guide recognises Midlands' chefs

Birmingham moves beyond Balti with Michelin stars Birmingham already has a reputation for the quality of its curry houses and now it's been tipped as the UK's emerging food destination by The Michelin Guide.

"Cuisine in Birmingham is well above standard," reveals Michelin editor Derek Bulmer.

In the new edition of the guide Luke Tipping maintains his star at Edgbaston's Simpsons restaurant while two other local chefs, Glynn Purnell at Purnell’s and Richard Turner at Turners of Harborne receive the culinary honour for the first time.

“Everyone thinks of Birmingham and the balti, which is good,” says Richard. “But there is a lot more to the city that people don’t give it credit for. This trio of Michelin stars shows that people in Birmingham can cook."
