A Girl Called Jack 's recipe blog has won Jack Monroe thousands of global readers, the 2013 Fortnum and Mason Judges' Choice Award and internet sensation status to boot. And the Guardian columnist, who rose to fame thanks to posting her delicious, nutritious and super cheap recipes online – all bought with an incredibly low budget of just £10 a week – has now published her very own cookbook to share her secrets to thrifty meal success.
The 25-year-old single mother began her blog www.agirlcalledjack.com from her mobile phone back in 2011 after she left her job at the Essex Fire Brigade, as combining irregular night shifts with raising her small son as a single parent proved too much.
She quickly and "surprisingly" – as she puts in the intro to her new cookbook – found that her "£10 weekly budget extended to home-baked breads for breakfast, thick wholesome protein-packed soups,... home-made burgers and piles of fruit and vegetables."
