Jane Birkin and Hermès have come to an "agreement" that the luxury label can keep her name for their iconic bags. According to a statement from the brand, Jane is "satisfied by the measures taken by Hermès" regarding the treatment of crocodiles slaughtered to make the Birkin bags.

Jane Birkin is reportedly "satisfied" with the Hermès investigation

The English beauty, who had been lending her name to the bags since 1981, initially publicly demanded that the brand remove it after seeing footage obtained by animal rights organisation PETA allegedly showing "cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags".

"Having been alerted to the cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags carrying my name, I have asked the Hermès Group to rename the Birkin," read a statement from the Death on the Nile actress, released to Agence France-Presse. "Until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag."

The French label launched a subsequent investigation into the farm, and addressed the issue in a second statement, after revealing that they could keep the Birkin name for the coveted accessories.

The brand's Birkin bags have become iconic

"Following the heartfelt emotion expressed by Jane Birkin and her request for explanation, Hermès, in agreement with her, reiterates its firm commitment in the ethical treatment of crocodiles in its partner farms," it read.

They added: "An audit carried out in July 2015 showed that all practices on the site are compliant.

"Any further irregularity will lead to Hermès immediately ceasing relations with this farm. Hermès stresses that the video content circulating on the internet purporting to be from a Zimbabwe crocodile farm was recorded before any partnership between Hermès and the farm was established. Furthermore, the footage shown was not all captured at that establishment."

"Jane Birkin is a good person, and we think she has been given false assurances by Hermès that it gives a hoot about animals," responded PETA in a statement. "Or that what we witnessed was - so conveniently - an aberration in the way that it factory-farms and slaughters crocodiles and alligators."
