Lily proves she's got brains as well as beauty

She's one of the hottest names on the international fashion scene, but Lily Cole is set to swap the glamour of the catwalks for student life at Cambridge. The British supermodel has passed her A-level exams with flying colours to win a place at the prestigious university.

The flame-haired beauty scored straight As in English, Philosophy, and Ethics and Politics. "We expected her to get the grades" said a spokesman for Latymer Upper School in West London where the teenager studied. Lily, who is now on holiday, will take up her place to read Social and Political Sciences at Kings College in 2007 despite her model agency warning her the decision could lose her millions in lost earnings.

The 18-year-old stunner is clearly determined to finish her education despite the demand from top fashion labels and glossy magazines. Unlike many of her fellow students, however, she won't be struggling with loans. She is already reported to have earned a cool £10 million from her modelling career. "We have always known that Lily had brains as well as beauty," says proud grandmother Maud Cole. "She just wants to get on with her studies without too much fuss."

Lily was spotted by a fashion scout at the age of 14 as she walked through London's Covent Garden with a friend and quickly became the next big thing. Voted Model Of The Year at this year's British Fashion Awards she has shot campaigns with Chanel and Prada and appeared on the cover of style bible Vogue.

Meanwhile, Melanie Slade - girlfriend of footballer Theo Walcott - is also celebrating making the grade this week. The pretty 17-year-old, who came to the attention of the media during the World Cup in Germany, gained AS levels in Psychology, Chemistry and Biology. "They were exactly what I wanted," she beamed as she opened her results with her friends. "I haven't told Theo yet but I'm sure he'll be really pleased." She will complete her A-level studies next year at Itchen College in Southampton and then hopes to take a year out before training in physiotherapy.
