Some of the most gorgeous gowns in Oscar history were taken out of storage this week to enjoy another moment in the spotlight. A Celebration Of Oscar Fashion was held at the film academy's headquarters to provide inspiration for this year's nominees, who are no doubt looking to outdo previous red-carpet efforts.

Among the highlights at the private fashion show, attended by press, stylists and stars, were Halle Berry's embroidered burgundy Elie Saab gown, which she wore to collect her 2002 gong for Monster's Ball, and Julia Robert's elegant vintage Valentino number from 2001. And of course no retrospective would be complete without paying homage to Cher, described by Vogue's Andre Leon Talley - who curated the event - as "one of the most original Oscar red-carpet sweepstakes winners".

The singer's sheer, beaded dress by Bob Mackie certainly made her stand out from the crowd in 1988 when she won the coveted gold statuette for her film Moonstruck. Some of the gowns date back as far as 1942 while others are more recent offering - including Michelle Williams' buttercup yellow affair and Hilary Swank's backless Guy Laroche dress.

So what should we expect from this year's February 25 ceremony? According to Andre, who is helping Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson to choose her frock, it's going to be all about sleek, sexy, old-school glamour.
