Jean Paul Gaultier was in buccaneering mood as models at his Paris show stalked the catwalk oozing Pirates Of The Caribbean attitude.
All the familiar hallmarks of the seafaring sartorial story were there - tricorn hats, battered leather boots, flamboyant wench-style dresses and wide belts. Lily Cole's 'top' had even been fashioned from three broad waist-cinchers.
The inspiration came from pirates because "(they) take little bits from everywhere… and mix them together," said fashion's former enfant terrible, who also "plundered" military and jungle references to add camouflage prints to some designs. Bringing the show to a dramatic finale were 13 ethereal, wind-swept brides. Dressed for their special day in white crochet tunics and layers of transparent tulle, the funky fiancées were also demonstrating a piratic twist with veils flowing from swashbuckler-style hats.
