Elie leads masterclass in dressing silver screen goddesses

Top names, including Elie Saab, offered Hollywood beauties a chance to see what they'll be missing out on if the writers' dispute prevents next month's Oscar ceremony being staged.

The Lebanese designer presented a parade of lavishly beaded couture creations adorned with sufficient bling to make a girl feel red-carpet ready.

Not for Elie the madcap designs seen on other catwalks. The only daring note in his collection came in the choice of palette, which was based on that rarest of precious stones, the coloured diamond, and featured citrine yellow, aqua and pale pink.

Luxurious ruching on strapless evening gowns drew the eye to the waist, where huge rhinestone brooches sparkled. More faux jewels were sprinkled on the one-shouldered versions, which featured crystal–encrusted straps.

It was easy to imagine Jennifer Lopez sashaying into a glittering event in a form-fitting tulle number decorated with an intricate cobweb of silver embroidery and glittering spangles.

And there were some choice pickings around from other labels. Jean-Paul Gaultier tempted with a daring mermaid-like sheath with sheer tummy panel in shimmering gold, and a floaty, gypsy-inspired gown with Sevillana sleeves which would be perfect for hitting the red carpet on a warm California evening.

Screen lovelies looking for something a smidge less formal had plenty of inspiration at the Roland Mouret show, where Victoria Beckham was front row to catch up on the latest creations from one of her favourite designers. Standout numbers included a striking black mandarin-collar gown with a dove breast-pink underskirt and an off-the-shoulder affair in sherbet yellow.
