With the Academy Awards ceremony just over a week away, red carpet watchers have been given a preview of what some of Tinseltown's highest-profile ladies are likely to be wearing on the big night.

A runway presentation at the Academy Award HQ in LA points to the February 24 ceremony being marked by strong colours, flowing goddess gowns and billowing silhouettes. The event showcased a selection of couture gowns reflecting the style of past winners such as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Halle Berry. Organisers envisaged Michael Douglas' wife in an elegant strapless sheath by African-born designer Ella Zahlan, with beads, art deco detailing and a dramatic side slit. And they saw Bridget Jones star Renee in a mustard gold strapless Angel Sanchez dress, reminiscent of the Oscar statuette itself.

Other highlights from the runway included a striking monochrome Oscar de la Renta petal-embroidered gown in silk organza with feather detailing, and a rose pink creation by Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad.

And it wasn't just fabulous gowns on display at the special show. Models took to the catwalk dripping in glittering gems from the likes of Cartier, Bo Chic and couture jeweller Martin Katz, who over the years has loaned pieces to hundreds of A-list guests.
