Following the colourful tone set by Diane von Furstenberg and DKNY at the start of the week, the runways of New York continued to be awash with vibrant hues as more of the industry's key players unveiled next autumn's collections.

Marc Jacobs led the way with a playful 'retro meets futurism' range featuring golden, crushed-velvet mini-skirts, pants featuring a pleated piece of kilt at the rear and slinky pastel hued dresses teamed with green jackets. Other highlights included an attention-grabbing hot purple zipped poncho and a monochrome bell-shaped dress.

A total of 60 models - more than double the average at this year's toned-down event -sashayed down the Jacob runway at south Manhattan's 69th Regiment Armoury, a good distance from the Bryant Park tents where the majority of shows are held.

Carolina Herrera also went for gem-bright colours in her glamourous vision of next season, which includes a flowing satin gown in amethyst purple and a sapphire blue trousers and jacket combo. The Venezuelan seamstress conjured images from the Victorian era by emphasising the waist with slim trousers and narrow skirts, many teamed with sharp riding jackets.

At Donna Karan the Eighties were the focus, with strong silhouettes provided by shoulder-padded jackets in pillar box red, inky blue and brown, and skirts wrapped and tucked in the back. Another key element to the show, which was rolled out in front of celeb guests including Milla Jovovich, were grey 'cold shoulder' dresses in draped jersey.

Fashionistas at the William Rast show may have found themselves distracted from the urban cool-themed looks on display by the famous front row guests. Showing for the first time at Big Apple fashion week Justin Timberlake - the man behind collection of casual denim pieces, mini skirts and simple blouses - was joined by actress girlfriend Jessica Biel, model Bar Refaeli, Nicky and Paris Hilton, Solange Knowles and actor Emile Hirsch.
