Spain's colourful Agatha Ruiz De La Prada brings Milan to close

4 MARCH 2009
Milan Fashion Week closed on an exuberant, fun-filled note on Tuesday when Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz De La Prada - who's known for her bright, surrealist designs - brought presentations to a close.

The 48-year-old lived up to her reputation, unveiling one of her most wild and wacky collections yet. A vibrant green mini dress closely resembling a fir tree was one of the standout pieces, along with a hot pink skirt in the form of an upside down umbrella, complete with hanging fabric 'raindrops'.

Other highlights included an eye-and-lips dress and hat combo and a one-sleeved gown which had clearly been inspired by a grand piano.

Madrid-born Agatha prides herself on her independence from international catwalk trends, and has taken an anti-establishment stance to the industry since debuting her first collection in 1980.

She's hugely popular in her native country and has parlayed her winning formula, which often features moon, heart, sun and star motifs, to everything from crockery and homeware to scent and lipbalms.

Also incorporating bright colours among the greys and deep blue palate of its autumn/winter collection was Japanese-owned Milanese fashion house Mila Schon. One notable creation featured a mass of geometric shapes in red, white and blue, fashioned into leggings, shorts and a top.

Meanwhile Zuhair Murad, the Lebanese designer behind Miley Cyrus' Oscars gown, went for a more classic aesthetic. He sent models down the runway in a series of sweeping evening gowns inspired by flowers, including an orange number which swathed the wearer in giant petals.
