The tartan trend: Timeless scottish style gets a fashionista flare

Tartan never goes out of style. While checks and plaids may not have a permanent spot in the limelight, planet fashion regularly gets the Highland treatment and tartan has been known to take Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander Mcqueen runways by storm.

It is a look no longer confined to a Scotsman's kilt or a schoolgirl's skirt, and with Burns Night fast approaching – the Scottish celebration commemorating poet Robert Burns – what better way to embrace the festivities than making a tartan style statement yourself?

It was the Chanel fashion house who brought the pattern to the fashion forefront. And last year, Karl Lagerfeld reignited our love for tartan with Chanel's checked-out show at the Metiers D'art.

Originally, the Scottish print first became the look de rigueur after King George IV visited the Highlands and was welcomed by  locals wearing  checked kilts. Now, tartan ticks every on-trend box.

It is a wardrobe must-have for most fashionistas and style conscious celebs have all been spotted in the plaid print — Jessica Alba, Emma Stone, SJP and Emma Watson to name a few. But most recently was Kate Middleton, who showed her dedication to Scotland and former place of university by wearing an Alexander Mcqueen tartan suit.

And while we love Vivienne Westwood’s tartan bag and Christian Louboutin pumps, the high street has also answered our prayers with a range of showstopping Scottish-inspired attire. Inject checks through a wool scarf or pretty pump or pull out all the fashion stops in an all in one like this ASOS creation. Give the look a more classic feel in Topshop's sleeveless tartan shirt, perfect teamed with a leather jacket and skinny jeans.
