Chopard jewels worth over £500,000 stolen in Cannes

Jewels worth more than £500,000 were stolen from a hotel in Cannes on Friday.

The luxury jewellery, which was supposed to be lent to stars gracing the red carpet at the annual film festival, was stolen by thieves who broke into a hotel room.

The room was occupied by an employee of the jewellery brand, but she left to go for dinner from 8pm to 3am and returned to discover that the safe containing the bracelets, necklaces and other items containing precious stone was missing.

The entire safe had been unscrewed from the inside of the hotel room and carried out of the hotel, according to police.

"The break-in was at the Novotel in the centre of town," said a police source.

"The room was said to be empty, and the safe was taken off the wall, before being removed."

By coincidence, the theft happened on the same day as the screening of Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring in Cannes, a film starring former Harry Potter actress Emma Watson as a member of a group of teens that steal from the rich and famous.

A host of stars have already been spotted wearing Chopard's wares on the red carpet at Cannes, including Cindy Crawford, Lana Del Rey and Cara Delevingne.

Model Cara was dazzling as she stepped out for the Great Gatsby premiere dripping in Chopard diamonds. The 20-year-old had teamed her custom-made Burberry dress with a silver diamond necklace, earrings and rings.
