Known collectively as The Olsen Twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have grown up in the glare of the media, making their acting debut as infants on American show Full House.
The pair were cast at the age of six months old in the programme, playing the role of character Michelle Tanner. Child labour laws which set strict guidelines about the number of hours a child actor could work meant they took it in turns to play her – which they did until the show ended in 1995. During their run on Full House the sisters began to branch out in to other film and TV productions.
Throughout the '90s the twins were staples on American TV. Projects included their drama Two Of A Kind which only ran for one season but was hugely popular and reran for several years on cable.
Beloved by the pre-teen set, by the mid-2000s Mary-Kate and Ashley had begun to branch out into fashion, and upon taking control of their production company Dulstar at the age of 18 they used the company to reach out to teenagers by selling products such as perfume and home decorations.
The twins are now incredibly successful fashion designers, with their own contemporary collection called Elizabeth and James, inspired by many of their unique vintage finds and pieces in their personal wardrobes, and a high end couture label, The Row, which in 2014 scored the pair Accessories Designer of the Year at the annual CFDA awards.
