The year to go green: Pantone names emerald the hottest shade for 2013

Pantone, the global authority of colour, recently unsheathed the newest hue for this coming year. After tough competition from previous contenders, with tangerine tango taking the reign for 2012 and honeysuckle its antecedent, emerald was deemed the hottest shade for 2013. The colour company is said to "comb the world looking for colour influences," and whether it's the fashion world's recent obsession of all things green that played a significant role in the recent rise or maybe just the colour’s powerfully regal appeal, this shade is here to stay this New Year and will brighten up even the darkest of winter days. Even Kate Middleton has taken to a touch of emerald. Since joining the royal ranks, the Duchess of Cambridge has become a fully-fledged style icon, forever pictured in the latest Alexander Mcqueen or Temperley creation. She was even ahead in the style stakes when spotted in a bold, bright green Mulberry frock for a public appointment at the Natural History Museum in London before Pantone had even made their announcement.

Executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, explained the reason for choosing the sure-fire headturner shade for 2013, stating "the most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other colour. She later announced "this powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors." And this certainly seems to be the case. A slew of luxury labels revelled in the new love affair of green for their fashion shows, among them were Chanel, Roberto Cavalli and Jonathan Sanders who all incorporated emerald into their autumn/winter 2012 collections. Inspired by both designers and celebrities, this bold shade is set to fly from the shelves in the form of handbags, dresses, scarves and shoes this year. So it's safe to say that whether high-street or high-fashion, this colour palette will be omnipresent across the entire retail world.
