Blue brigade: Silver screen starlets stun in navy gowns

Share this:

A-list actors dutifully donned their designer dresses, sky-high heels and million-dollar jewels for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, giving us a high-fashion pre-Oscars fashion parade. But a host of starlets made a serious sartorial splash as they transformed the red carpet into a sea of blue, stepping out in stunning navy gowns that stole the show. Jennifer Lawrence was ill with pneumonia. But the 22-year-old Silver Linings Playbook star still managed to look nothing short of stunning as she lead the blue brigade in a Christian Dior Haute Couture bodice dress. Side-swept curls and red lipstick completed her old Hollywood glamour look.

Amanda Seyfried, meanwhile, was taking the deep blue trend a bit more literally with a mermaid gown. The fishtail hemline of her Zac Posen dress made for a stunning silhouette on the red carpet, while she also finished off her ultra-glamorous ensemble with side-swept waves. The actress, who stars in Les Miserables alongside Anne Hathaway, was nervous about her tight-fitting frock, joking: "I hope we don't win the ensemble award. I don't want to go on stage!" Nicole Kidman, meanwhile, also had a case of the blues in in lacy Vivienne Westwood with a thigh-high split. Basic black also had a red carpet makeover at the glamorous awards ceremony, with stunning leading ladies Anne Hathaway, Michelle Dockery and Claire Danes rocking gorgeous black ensembles.

Anne, who picked up Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in Les Miserables, dazzled in a Giambattista Valli gown with a sheer neckline and miniskirt partially covered by layers of tulle. She was joined by British beauty and Downton Abbey star Michelle, who had chosen a daring vintage Chado Ralph Rucci black satin gown with sheer panels running down the sides. Deep red lips added a splash of colour to the ensemble. Claire Danes, meanwhile, rocked a gorgeous black, one-shoulder Givenchy gown with a thigh-high split that was emphasised with white floral, cascading embroidery. The Homeland star, who took home the prize for female actor in a drama series, chose burgundy lips to offset her blonde locks to perfection. But the stars weren't all black and blue - many leading ladies showed up rocking shades of white. Colombian beauty Sofia Vergara was the epitome of Hollywood glamour as she showed off her famous curves in a white gold liquid lame gown by Donna Karan Atelier.

And Naomi Watts shimmered and sparkled in pale Marchesa. Kerry Washington, meanwhile, went for a more unusual look with her bodice and skirt combination from Rodarte. It wasn't only muted tones that reigned on Sunday evening, however. Several starlets, including Lea Michele, Jessica Chastain and Freida Pinto brought a splash of colour to the glamorous proceedings. Glee star Lea flaunted her enviable physique in a strapless fuchsia Valentino gown that perfectly complemented her deep, LA girl tan.

Also pretty in pink was the ever-glamorous Freida Pinto, who had chosen a cowl-neck Roland Mouret gown with a thigh-high split and small black belt to emphasise her tiny waist.
