Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's cover of US Vogue made waves the world over when it was unveiled on Friday afternoon.

But insiders have said that it was Kate Upton, not the power couple, who was originally planned to grace the coveted cover of the April issue.

The Communcations Director at Vogue made a statement denying the reports, which were printed by E! Online.

"We are all huge supporters of Kate here at Vogue and have been thrilled to feature her numerous times in the past year, both on the cover and inside the magazine," she said.

"There was never a cover commitment made to Kate, and we look forward to working with her in the future."

While blonde bombshell Kate was not featured on the front cover, she was seen flaunting her famous curves inside the issue.

Modelling stunning gowns, Kate gave an interview in which she rubbished a comparison between herself and Marilyn Monroe.

"Maybe it was drugs and alcohol that destroyed her," she said. "Maybe having no family support destroyed her."

What I try to do – and it took me a little while to learn – is to only do things I really believe in so that it's more of a collaboration.

"That way, I'm not pretending to be someone I'm not. I'm not putting out this, Look at me! I'm sexy! and then feeling like a fake, which lead to feeling depressed and empty inside."

Kate has previously appeared on the cover of US Vogue, showing off her stunning physique on the June 2013 issue in a swimsuit.

Kim Kardashian was delighted to land the coveted cover, tweeting, "This is such a dream come true!! Thank you @VogueMagazine for this cover! OMGGGGG!! I can't even…"Renowned fashion photographer Annie Leibovitz, who shot the wedding-inspired shoot, joined Twitter just after it was unveiled.

Kim welcomed her to the social media network, tweeting, "Please welcome @annieleibovitz to twitter! She is the legendary photographer who shot our @voguemagazine cover! Love u Annie! #BestMemories."
